argus vol i no 18 april 26 1948 buffalo new york szymanski names norton committees - the president of the board of managers al gzymanski announ ced the following committee ap pointments at the last meeting of the board on april 20th the chairman of the class offi cers nominating committee will be henry rose and his group will include gerald marx irving haag tom hinckley hay whelan marty kentner bob oswald paul del linger dorothy gracz ted kap siak mary kubica ed andrews al szymanski harold beal dan tenerowitz and george smith john goergen is chairman and bernard green advisor of the handbook committee with sonja eskola and helen falk rounding out the group the orientation day committee is headed by isabelle taylor and includes herbert constantine ted kapsiak art earith george smith and an as-yet-unnamed girl to serve as tea chairman as chairman of the house com mittee harry johnson will work with irene graham norma brandt shirley clabeaux earl bawtin heimer merton miller and henry rose the student activities commit tee chairman is fritz febel and its members are paul dellinger james curtin ed andrews and doris near on the finance committee are lee jones as chairman and vern on gibson george smith dorothy gracz jeanne richards and w c bud heider with don gardiner as ex-officio member lois chassin heads the curricu lum committee members of which include kenneth kurtz betty sloan jack thornton leonard serfustini and sylvia torre ned radjenovich marie inder bitzen barbara davidson and jack rosenbach are on the cafe teria committee under the chair manship of dick bremer bob marshall was appointed chairman of the constitution com mittee with ted kapsiak mary ellen chasey constance barone and donald swift members of the dormitory com mittee under the chairmanship of stanley wehling are ned radjeno vich nancy barrett bob j evans and nancy uphill contest announced for history majors the society of colonial wars has announced a competitive essay contest concerning the colonial period of american history a prize of 250 is to be awarded to the best essay which is related to a phase of american colonial life from the founding of jamestown in the province of board of managers last week this is an additional service to the student body by facilitating the sale of used text books by students students will set their own prices the plan will be handled by the norton house committee and will be tried for the first time this summer the book exchange will be in operation for the first few weeks of each term the exchange was suggested by the ub nsa committee and re ferred to the house committee plans are being worked out for a book exchange system among the colleges in the new york region of nsa class officers to be nominated by petition election date may 5 the board of managers last tuesday decided upon prospective changes in the election of class officers nominations for next year's officers will be made with petitions signed by ten members of the class involved these petitions can be obtained on request at the direc tor's office at norton hall they must be submitted on or before friday april 30th at the norton counter in care of henry rose chairman of the class officers nominating committee officers will be elected by the prospective sopho mores juniors and seniors of each of the five campus schools — the present freshman class for example will choose the sophomore officers for the next school year four candidates must ii run for each office if the petitionsm do supply this minimum thch additional will be named h by nominating college no longer country club experience capen tells group the day is past when going to college is a country club experience said chancellor samuel p capen in welcoming prospective college students to the 18th an nual acquaintance day at ub last friday afternoon in hayes auditorium approximately 625 high-school stu dents who anticipate entering college next fall attended there is no room for that kind of thing continued the chancellor the main duty of a college is the work carried on in the class rooms and libraries the business of a university is to present these intellectual opportuni ties but the university never makes the student take advantage of what the university offers dr capen pointed out that this does not preclude participating in other things which are not part of the curriculum this university has a wide range of such opportunities said dr capen i it seems clear to me from the evidence that we gather that it is more im portant now than ever be fore for young people who have the capacity to acquire what we call a higher edu cation those who do hot take advantage of the oppor tunity to acquire such an education will be at a-great disadvantage and handicap the chancellor pointed out that today's high school student will be in competi tion with the 2 million plus service personnel in college now and that in itself puts l a higher premium on getting advanced training than ever before alfred szymanski pres ident of the student union presided at the general as sembly and introduced chan cellor capen following the assembly the students divided them selves into groups according to their interests address ing these groups were dean julian park dean stockton kimball dean r w groh professor albert r mugel mr m w ertell dean a bertram lemon dean l o cummings dean paul e mohn mr d bruce falkey miss helen sommer dr gordon swartz mr philip c elliott mr wallace a vanlier and dean edward 3 jones an inspection tour of the campus was then made by the prospective college stu dents members of alpha phi dmega fraternity acted as guides sophomore women attend tea wed a tea for sophomore women will be held on wednesday afternoon from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m in the west room of norton hall dean of women lillias m macdonald has announced that the tea is being given so that the women of the sophomore class can become bet ter acquainted with some of the women faculty members members of the faculty attending will be dr mazie e wagner dr harriet f montague miss doro thea duttweiler mrs ruth b nol ler and miss emma e deters the following members of the sophomore class will pour rose mary brownjohn a'rleen burke mary ellen chasey shirley e clabeau janet p clark sonja a eskola lois e hayn and june o kinal hostesses will be janet i ander son edith j anthony dora l bertoglio stephanie faryna marie it inderbitzen alice kuczka nan cy m slade and donna j smith sororities frats to sell nsa cards in an effort to sell 3000 nsa co 6p cards by may 15th all fratern ities and sororities are being in vited to sell the cards each organ ization that sells 200 or more cards will be presented with a leather bound minute book with detach able leaves each individual will get 10c for each 1 card sold and the student with the most sales will receive a table-radio the sale campaign starting on saturday may ist will last until saturday may 14th a progress
