merry christmas and happy new year lu spectrum official student publication of the university of buffalo friday december 15 1950 volume 1 q 48 buffalo n y number 4 u.b installs eighth chancellor during january convocation the inauguration of dr t k raymond mcconnell as chance llor of the university of buf falo will feature two major events on jan 5 and 6 1951 the inauguration ceremony will be held saturday jan 6 at 10:00 a.m in kleinhans music hall a civic dinner will be held friday jan 5 at 6:45 p.m in the hotel statler tickets for the dinner are on sale in the alumni office for uve dollars per person free tickets for the convocation in kleinhans music hall are also obtainable in the alumni office a iuncheon for delegates will be held on january 6th in norton hall and a reception will be conducted in lockwood memorial library delegates from many of the leading universities of the united states aud neighboring countries are expected to attend the in agural events gen louis l bab cock and dean claude e puffer co-chairmen of the inauguration committee said that several noted educators will be scheduled to speak at the major events the university's faculty alumni and student body as well as citizens from the community at large will take part in the ceremony before assuing chancellorship of the university of buffalo last september dr mcconnell was dean of the college of science literature and the arts at the university of minnesota succeed ing dr camuel p capen the 49 i year old educator is the eighth chancellor of the university which i is now in its 105th year athletic council to hold election after vacation the election of three student members-at-large of the athletic council will take place on mon day jan 8 it was announced by harvey resnik today this coordinating body for de termining and suggesting athletic policies of the university was formed last year to act as liaison between the students and the fac ulty committee on athletics rec ommendations formulated by the council become policy when ap proved by the faculty committee the council includes representa tives of basketball football minor sports and alumni but to the student memberß-at-large is left the task of making known the senti ments and desires of the student who is connected with athletics only as a supporter of the uni versity teams mr resnik sole member elected last year who is still active is offi cially conducting the election men wishing to be candidates must be full-time students maintaining a c average application forms for candidates may be secured at the norton counter today or monday the completed blanks which must include 250 valid signatures must be placed in harve resnik's box at the norton counter by wednesday dec 20 dr mcconnell's christmas letter i am happy to extend christmas greetings to the student body through the generous offices of the spectrum these are serious and sober times that call for sacrifice cour age and wisdom ahove all they call for steadfast loyalty to the ideas and ideals that give true meaning to the christmas season and for faith in the ultimate tri umph of freedom and goodwill among men perilous as are these times they should stimulate neither cynicism nor despair but determination to make the best of our opportunities and abilities less for personal ad vantage than for the good of all mankind dr t raymond mcconnell chancellor pre-registration of a-s students all currently registered students in the college of arts and scien ces school of education and the graduate school of arts and scien ces who intend returning next semester should call at the office of the university registrar room 201 hayes hall for registration material in accordance with the following schedule graduate students seniors and juniors wednesday jan 3 sopho mores monday jan 8 freshmen campus med-dent building reality in the near future ' in the annual reports submitted by the former chancellor and comptroller it was stated that the university is facing a serious fi nancial situation due to a drop in enrollment and the effect of the military situation there are many problems inherent in the uni versity's position among which are the need for a building program and the need for additional endow ment funds operating expenses have increased and incoming funds ate not sufficient to cover these and the cost of programs which should be undertaken as a result the net surplus for the year 1949-60 is quickly being used up of imme diate need is a new building to re place townsend hall its two up per floors have been condemned for classroom use by city inspectors on the ground that they cannot be quickly evacuated in case of fire the officials atso mentioned the need for dormitories on the cam pus and additional classroom la boratory and office space dr capen delivered a brief vale dictory as follows it would be impossible for anyone to have a more rewarding professional ex perience than has fallen my lot during the twenty-eight years of my connection with university of buffalo that it has been so satis fying is due in large measure to the council as a corporate body the council has not only given the university loyal unstinted and highly productive service it has also given the chancellor consis tent support in all his official acti vities and consideration and honor far beyond his deserts as indi viduals the members of the coun cil have given him as well friend ship and delightful personal asso ciations my gratitude for all these benefits is beyond my power to ex press and for the university my wish may best be summed up in the ancient latin phrase that has been traditional in the academic world from the days of the medieval uni versities vivat chescat floreat in aetornum live grow flourish in eternity drive for cans raises clangor on campus in keeping with the genial spirit of christmas on campus the gen eral activities committee under chairman don holzman has com pleted plans for the first annual cans drive chairman of the drive for collection of canned food to be distributed to needy families is bob knight the cans drive will culminate at the gac xmas party in norton auditorium on dec 20 there will be collections on december 18 19 and 20 of all types of canned foods which will be distributed by the goodfellows association the goodfellows is made up of courier express workers whose function it is to help the numerous needy families in the buffalo area success of this drive is war ranted by the fact that all organi zations on campus are represented in the gac and their representa tives have decided to back this cam paign no competition is planned among the groups and the cans drive will not compete with other xmas programs on cam pus norton union and the engineer ing building have been selected as strategic depots for the contribu tions to be collected the xmas party and oversized coffee-hour to be held in norton on december 20 under the direction of larry bea bow will feature the university of buffalo glee club of 75 voices in a special christmas program the collection of canned food 6b tained will be turned over to a rep resentative of the goodfellows dur ing the party cans of food can be purchased in norton union on the collection days for contributions to the cans drive this will enable students to support the drive without carrying cans from their homes to campus unclassified and part-time students thursday jan 11 after registration forms have been completely filled out and signed by the appropriate advisor they should
